Winnipeg Landscaping, Start To Finish

Most of a yard is soil, water and light. Sort those out and the planting looks after itself. Plants put into ground that doesn’t drain get replaced every spring.

Heavyscape is a local Winnipeg landscaping contractor, and we build yards from the ground up. Grading and soil first, then sod, planting beds, decorative rock, and the trees and boulders that give a yard its shape. One crew handles all of it, so nothing gets handed between trades halfway through.

Our Landscaping Services

Some yards need one bed rebuilt. Some need everything from the fence in. Tell us which one you’ve got and we’ll price it either way.

  • A back yard laid out with a circular lawn, a paver border, a staked new tree and perennial beds set with fieldstone boulders

    Landscape design

We work out the whole yard before anything gets dug: where the lawn ends, where the beds run, and what goes in them. Those decisions get made standing in the yard with you.

  • Fresh sod with the roll seams still showing, laid around a cedar tree in a river rock bed against a new cedar fence

    Sod installation

A new lawn on ground that has been prepared to take one. The grade and the soil underneath get sorted out first, then the sod goes down.

  • Hostas, junipers and dwarf cedars planted in a black rock bed alongside a stone walkway, with potted begonias at the step

    Garden and planting beds

Beds shaped, edged and planted, with the soil in them worked over first. Perennials, shrubs and cedars picked to handle a zone 3 winter.

  • Grey rock bed with black steel edging cut into a lawn around a mature linden

    Decorative rock and mulch

Rock and mulch beds, edged so they hold their line instead of creeping into the lawn. The stone gets picked against the house and the planting around it.

Grading, soil work, boulders and trees. Regrading a yard that holds water, bringing in soil, setting boulders and planting trees. Most of it happens before the sod and the beds go in.

What Winnipeg Ground Does To A Yard

Any yard looks good the week it’s finished. The ones that still look good in year three had the soil and the drainage dealt with.

  • The soil is clay

Winnipeg sits on heavy clay. It holds water instead of letting it through, and it swells and shrinks with the seasons. Roots in it stay shallow unless something better goes in first.

  • The season is short

This is zone 3. Anything planted here has to come through a winter that reaches minus thirty and a spring that can still frost in late May.

  • Water has to go somewhere

A flat yard on clay holds water after a rain. Sod sitting in it thins out and beds sitting in it rot at the root, so the grade gets set before anything is planted.

If you want to know what we’d do about the grade, the soil or the drainage on your yard, ask. Jordan will walk you through it before you commit to anything.
