Deck Builder in Winnipeg

We build a handful of decks in Winnipeg each season, and we take our time getting each one right. Wood, cedar or composite. Raised up high or sitting right at grade.

Decks built with your yard in mind

We're landscapers first, so we're thinking about more than just the deck while we're building it. We're looking at where the stairs land, where the water goes when the snow melts, and how the deck ties into the patio, garden and grass. The goal is for the whole backyard to feel like it belongs together.

Want a stone patio underneath a raised deck? A fire pit area off the stairs? A retaining wall to level things out first? We can handle that too, as one project with one crew. Less juggling for you, and a backyard that looks like somebody thought the whole thing through.

Wood, cedar or composite

All three can hold up well in Winnipeg when they're built properly. The choice really comes down to budget, the look you want, and how many weekends you want to spend maintaining it.

  • Pressure-treated wood decks

The most budget-friendly way into a solid deck. Give it a good stain every couple of years and it'll treat you well.

  • Cedar decks

Warmer colour, naturally rot-resistant, and it smells pretty great on a hot summer day. It does need a little more upkeep than composite, but there's something about a cedar deck that just feels right.

  • Composite decks

No splinters, no staining, and very little maintenance. It costs more up front, but it takes another item off the yearly chore list.

Finish it with wood, aluminum or glass railing. Go with glass if you want to keep the view open and avoid putting a bunch of stuff between you and your backyard.

What goes under your Winnipeg deck

Winnipeg clay swells when it's wet, shrinks when it's dry, and heaves every winter. A deck is only as steady as what's holding it up, so this is one part we don't cut corners on.

Depending on your soil, the deck height and the load involved (a hot tub changes the math), we'll use helical screw piles or concrete piles poured below the frost line. Screw piles go in quickly, don't need curing time, and can even be installed in winter. Concrete is the better choice in some spots.

We'll look at your yard and tell you which makes sense and why.

Permits and inspections, handled

Most raised decks in Winnipeg need a building permit, and plenty need a development permit too. We handle the drawings, submit the applications, book the inspections and deal with the City for you.

Permits can take a few weeks, so if you're thinking about a new deck for next summer, fall is a pretty good time to get on the schedule.

Deck questions we get a lot

  • Do I need a permit for a deck in Winnipeg?

If it's more than 2 feet off the ground in your back or side yard, yes. Usually that means two permits and at least two inspections. We handle all of it.

  • How long does a build take?

Most decks take 3–6 days on site once the permits are approved.

  • Is composite worth it in Winnipeg winters?

It handles freeze-thaw well and doesn't need staining. Wood costs less up front and can last a long time with proper maintenance. We'll walk you through both so you can decide what makes sense for your yard and budget.

  • Can you replace my old deck?

Yes. Sometimes the framing is still in good shape and only the boards and railing need replacing, which can save you some money. If the footings have moved or the structure has seen better days, we'll rebuild it from the ground up.

  • Can you build a deck for a hot tub?

Yes. A hot tub needs its own permit and a structure designed for the weight, so we'll plan for both from the start.

What Winnipeg Homeowners Say

  • Great experience working with Jordan and Heavyscape. They landscaped both my front and back yards, installed pavers, built a fence, and constructed new stairs and a landing. Throughout the project they were flexible and thorough, approachable and easy to work with. Communication was excellent, the price was fair, and great quality of the work. Highly recommended.
